Author must be a specialist in writing. However, to have any ideas to write on papers, all authors need a lot of ideas to compose and combine together. To do so, reading is the best way to create ideas. As in Khmer proverb, "The more you read, the more you gain" and also "Long life learning."
As I have observed on many authors, they all read books everyday. Some authors even said, "I could not sleep if I don't have books around and read them before I go to bed." Others also said, "One book can change your life."
